JOB SUMMARY

The Vascular Access RN has primary responsibility for insertion of PICCs and monitoring of outcomes vascular and infusion therapy related consultation.  This position will work closely with Medical Imaging and Nursing resources to triage all PICC requests. The position may also be called upon to assist with difficult peripheral IV starts or assess for and manage complications related to other types of vascular access devices.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES


The Vascular Access RN has primary responsibility for insertion of PICC lines, monitoring of outcomes, vascular and infusion therapy related consultation. The position may also be called upon to assist with difficult peripheral IV starts or assess for and manage complications related to other types of vascular access devices.

 

Responsible for triage referrals for placement of PICC lines to determine appropriateness of line, personnel for insertion, priority of placements throughout the day and availability of inserter. Will also provide technical assistance for the accessing of implanted ports and declotting of lines.

 

The Vascular Access RN will assist with collection and interpretation of monthly/quarterly statistics on number of lines inserted and complication rates. Assist in applying results of monitoring to quality improvement efforts related to infusion therapy.

 

Provide consultation regarding infusion therapy concepts that impact the delivery of medications and type of line used. Mentors staff who complete PICC Insertion Training and are interested in gaining experience in PICC/Midline insertion. Maintain formal authority to assess RN initial and ongoing competency to insert PICCs.

 

Responsible for ongoing communication with nursing committees, staff, Physicians, Medical Imaging and Nurse Educators regarding the appropriate infusion therapy device, placement, care and maintenance of lines and follow-up.

 

Regularly attend and report at meetings as required on education and quality metrics.

 

Assists with the development, revision of policies, procedures, protocols, or other standards related to vascular access.
