JOB SUMMARY

As a member of the multidisciplinary health care team, screens, assesses, intervenes and educates patients at nutritional risk.  Participates in continuous quality improvement activities and educational experiences in support of departmental philosophy and objectives, as well as Health System initiatives.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES


In collaboration with the multidisciplinary health care team, assesses the nutritional status of patients based on the unique requirements of the diagnosis, biochemical anthropometrics, physical, dietary data, and developmental needs in accordance with standards of practice and hospital policy. Documents initial nutritional assessment and follow-up according to established format and time frames.

 

Provides nutritional counseling and age specific education assisting patients and/or their significant other(s) in making desired changes in eating habits. Follows all HIPPA guidelines, maintaining confidentiality of position acquired information.

 

Promotes cost effective and appropriate patient care utilizing nutritional supplements/enteral products and department education materials. Monitors patient nutritional status during regular scheduled meal rounds.

 

Assists with the development, data collection and evaluation of department policies and procedures, patient menus, enteral products, quality indicators and productivity standards. Completes quality improvement assignments.

 

Assists with the training and evaluation of Patient Food Service employees ensuring an understanding of department policies and procedures and guidelines for clinical nutrition care.

 

Conducts a variety of education programs and presentations as requested for health care professionals, System employees and the community, maintaining accurate documentation of community service hours.

 

Performs all aspects of job in an environment that optimizes patient, customer and environmental safety and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and compliance efforts.

 

Utilizes team approach to provide technical support and coverage during meal periods as needed by patients, departmental staff and fellow healthcare professionals.

 

Works in a collaborative manner with team in providing all inpatient, outpatient, and community services.

 

The Nutrition Care Process is used when assessing, educating and following up with patients. A PES statement, Nutrition diagnosis, Nutrition Intervention with a goal and Nutrition Monitoring and Evaluation are included. ENCPT terminology is used appropriately.

 


As needed, additional responsibilities reasonably within the scope of duties and physical requirements may be assigned.  ALL DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS MUST BE PERFORMED CONSISTENT WITH THE UW HEALTH PERFORMANCE STANDARDS AND RESPECT FOR PEOPLE COMMITTMENTS.

Possession of a valid license issued by IDFPR (Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation) as a Registered Dietitian OR Successful completion of an internship program recognized by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as a Registered Dietitian and obtain valid RD license within 6 months of hire.

Certified specialist as required for the position or ability to complete within the first two years of employment.

 Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD)

 Board Certified Specialist in Obesity and Weight Management (CSOWM)

 Certified Eating Disorders Registered Dietitian (CEDRD)

LICENSE, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS MUST BE MAINTAINED PER UW HEALTH POLICY. 


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong organizational and problem solving abilities.

 

Knowledge of nutrition and dietary principles and familiarity with medical terminology common to nutrition.

 

Ability to effectively interact and communicate with physicians and all levels of staff and with patients, visitors and members of the community.

 

Successful completion of annual clinical, age and job specific competencies and skill verification tools required.
