JOB SUMMARY

Clinical Anesthetists practice as part of the anesthesia care team, to provide high quality anesthesia care to a complex patient population. Clinical Anesthetists will perform their duties under medical direction provided by the UW Department of Anesthesiology faculty anesthesiologists in the anesthetizing locations at University Hospital, American Family Children's Hospital, Madison Surgery Center, The American Center Hospital, and other designated or future sites. Clinical Anesthetists demonstrate a high degree of clinical expertise in working with patients with acute and chronic illnesses in the anesthesia setting. They work collaboratively with administrative, nursing, physician, and other staff to assure safe, effective, quality patient care and to promote UW Health's educational and research missions.

 

Clinical Anesthetists will provide care in accordance with applicable licensing, regulations, bylaws, institutional policies and privileges.

 

For practice at University Hospital, American Family Children's Hospital, and The American Center, the Clinical Anesthetist is eligible to begin practice after they are credentialed and privileged through the UW Medical Staff Administration process.  For practice at Madison Surgery Center or other locations, the Clinical Anesthetist is eligible to begin practice after they are credentialed and privileged at that facility.  Active hospital privileges will be required and reviewed on a biennial basis.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES


Immediate attendance of patients undergoing anesthesia or monitoring for surgical and medical procedures.

 

Performance and documentation of pre-anesthetic evaluations.

 

Development of an anesthetic plan in collaboration with the anesthesiologist.

 

Administration of anesthetic drugs and agents as prescribed by the anesthesiologist.

 

Monitoring and measurement of physiologic variables during anesthesia and recovery.

 

Maintenance and application of various techniques for physiologic maintenance, measurement, and evaluation in the operating room.

 

Facilitation of emergence and recovery from anesthesia.

 

Performance and documentation of postoperative assessment after an anesthetic.

 

Participation in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, particularly airway management.

 

Maintains accurate, complete, concise and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.

 

Utilizes critical thinking to synthesize and analyze collected data.

 

Counsels and educates patients and families.

 

Facilitates consistent, coordinated care and clear communication among all members of the healthcare team.

 

Incorporates the patient and family in care planning and treatment across settings.

 

Serves as an advocate for patients and families in navigating the health care system.

 

Demonstrates insight into own strengths, limitations and knowledge deficits.

 

Demonstrates initiative to meet identified learning needs using multiple resources.

 

Actively participates in self-evaluation by seeking and utilizing guidance and constructive feedback in a professional manner.

 

Continuously seeks opportunities for clinical advancement and knowledge and skill attainment.
