JOB SUMMARY

The House Supervisor oversees the staffing and assignment of work functions for the Department of Nursing; coordinates the processing of all requests made to UW Health (including American Family Children's Hospital and The American Center) by internal and external sources for actual or potential inpatient placement or for clinically complex outpatient services; and provides general supervisory and administrative assistance to the nursing units. The House Supervisor acts collaboratively as a resource and liaison between the Department of Nursing and the Access Center, Admissions, Surgical Services, Emergency Department, Outpatient Surgery, Ambulatory Procedure Center, Cath Lab, and Radiology to coordinate and facilitate staffing resources to support the placement of patients to appropriate units.

 

The House Supervisor has expertise in acute care criteria for inpatient hospitalization, detailed knowledge of the scope of practice of each UW Health nursing unit and a working knowledge of operations, policies and procedures.  Knowledge of sound nursing practice, overall hospital administration, emergency management, crisis intervention, conflict resolution, negotiation, and delegation are essential to effective performance.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES


Administration of nurse staffing and assignment of work functions during a given shift to provide optimum patient and family care.

 

Receive shift report from the Nursing Resource Center Staff and/or the previous shift’s House Supervisor to be informed of the current status of the nursing units and plans for staffing for the upcoming shift.

 

Review staffing reports throughout the shift in order to make re-assignments to meet changing clinical needs.

 

Assign or re-assign per diem, float staff, agency staff, and regular staff, as operations necessitate, to provide optimum patient care based on assessment of staff-related information.

 

Work in conjunction with the Nursing Resource Center staff to coordinate staffing resources with patient care needs.

 

Work collaboratively with department leadership (managers, providers and CTLs/STMs) to enhance operational efficiency and optimize the delivery of care.

 

Participates in daily safety and capacity huddles.

 

Serve as a leader and resource to the clinical team.

 

Increase leader visibility through frequent and active rounding on all Nursing units to optimize patient care, enhance patient safety, as well as empower, support and develop our staff.

 

Partner with the clinical team to optimize the patient and family experience with each encounter.

 

Assist in prioritization in resource utilization. Refer complex situations to VP for Medical Affairs, CNO(s), Nursing Administrator on-call, and/or Hospital Administrator on-call when necessary.

 

Collaborate with physicians, inpatient staff, and admissions staff on medical necessity issues and determination of appropriate level of care.

 

Support identification of new and improved methods regarding clinical operations of the hospital.

 

Provide overall administrative and support functions and interpret hospital, university, state and nursing policies, procedures and practices to ensure safe and comprehensive patient and family care.

 

Interpret organization, hospital and nursing policies and procedures to staff, patient, and visitors.

 

Contact environmental services, maintenance, and security staff when their services are needed.

 

Arrange for patients and visitors to receive special services, such as counseling, clergy services, etc. during the off hours.

 

Address problems and conflicts which arise between patients, families and healthcare providers and provide appropriate support and service recovery.

 

Locate and deliver supplies, medicines, bloods, specimens, food, etc. when urgently needed by the patient care units; communicate supply issues to the appropriate leader(s) for process improvement opportunities.

 

Record and report unusual events or incidents, take action and/or make referral to appropriate hospital and nursing leadership.

 

Respond to all Blue Cart, Rapid Response, emergency fire and calls while providing direction or assistance as necessary.

 

Serve on hospital and nursing department committees as appropriate.

 

Provide supervision to the nursing staff and function as an expert nursing resource.

 

Provide guidance and feedback in relation to staff performance and policy adherence.

 

Evaluate care delivered by providing direct and immediate feedback and coaching, ongoing verbal and written feedback to applicable leadership on the performance of staff. Collaborates in evaluating performance trends of CTLs and other staff under their direction, recommending and participating in corrective action as required.

 

Provide input to leaders on learning and development needs of staff, mentoring of new staff, and mentoring and identification of future leaders.

 

Facilitate Fitness for Duty exam during Employee Health Services off-hours.

 

Provide formal and informal in-service to nursing staff about new policies, procedures and technologies necessary for patient care.

 

Provide in the moment support to new orientees, agency and/or per diem staff and charge nurses so that they are able to carry out their responsibilities with expertise and confidence.

 

Evaluate patient conditions as requested and help staff problem solve clinical issues, serving as a coach for chain of command in the absence of the nursing unit leadership.

 

Promote the recognition of staff and celebrate accomplishments within and across teams.

 

Develop own clinical and supervisory skills in accordance with the goals and objectives of the hospital and Department of Nursing, and consistent with position responsibilities.

 

Evaluate personal professional development needs, develop goals, and objectives, formulate and institute action plan.

 

Attend continuing education classes and read pertinent literature in keeping with objectives.

 

Function as a role model for staff with regard to investment in own professional development.
