JOB SUMMARY

The Child Life Services Manager is directly responsible for the operations of child life services provided to inpatients and outpatients of the American Family Children's Hospital (AFCH).  Child Life is comprised of child life specialists, child life assistants, music therapists, patient family liaison, and cosmetologist.   This position also supports the operations of the AFCH Patient and Family Advisory Council, Liaison to AFCH Hospital School, and works in partnership with the AFCH Volunteer Program.  This position reports to the Director, AFCH Operations and is a key team member of the multidisciplinary, AFCH Inpatient Steering Council, ED Steering Meeting, and the AFCH Quality Coordinating Council.

 

The activities of the Child Life Services Manager include the following:

 

 Provides direct, day to day management of the department, including but not limited to: staffing, scheduling, program coordination, implementation, planning, and evaluation.

 Responsible for overall human resource management to include staff education, development and mentorship, coaching, discipline and quality improvement efforts for the Department.

 Responsible for fiscal management, and asset management for the Department.

 Overall responsibility for coordinating with child life educator and child life staff for education and training

 Responsible for all regulatory, accreditation and compliance issues of Department.  Responsible for the promotion and coordination of all research and development programs for the Department.

 Responsibilities are consistent with the mission statement of UW Health as well as goals and objectives that support UW Health Kids - AFCH's strategic business plan.

 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES


Departmental Manager

 

Works collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary care teams to ensure that high quality child life services are provided throughout the organization.

 

Communicates information and engages in joint problem solving with direct reports.

 

Implements operational and strategic goals and objectives of AFCH to further develop programs to enhance multidisciplinary collaboration. Develops and implements appropriate departmental policies and procedures to enhance operations.

 

Responsible for the operational, financial and personnel management of areas of responsibility.

 

Provides leadership, management, guidance to all aspects of the day-to-day management of child life programs.

 

Participates as a key member of unit-based quality councils and the overall AFCH Quality Coordinating Council.

 

Monitors productivity levels to ensure that budget goals are met.

 

Assures that standards of excellence are developed, implemented, measured, and maintained for departmental staff.

 

Conducts regular, no less than monthly, staff meetings with all employees.

 

Administers research activities and grants within the department or coordinated with other hospital departments or academic departments.

 

Works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary care team to optimize the involvement and feedback of the parent advisory council to provide the highest level of satisfaction.

Fiscal Manager

 

Oversees and coordinates the annual budget for the Department that supports UW Health Kids overall strategic business plan.

 

Ensure that department achieves its goals within the budget expectations. Report any monthly variances and proactively plan to resolve variances.

 

Effectively manage all fiscal resources; including hospital and philanthropy funding to continuously look for ways to enhance value to the organization and the consumer

 

Coordinates overall cost containment/cost avoidance program and promotes cost awareness philosophy.

 

Works collaboratively with Directors responsible for inpatient, emergency, and outpatient operations to deploy child life staffing resources to meet the needs of our patients and families.

 

Resource Manager

 

Reviews and evaluates weekly payroll report and utilization report for areas of responsibility.

 

Oversees all human resource management for the Department to include:

 

 The ongoing recruitment and retention of employees to assure adequate staffing.

 

 Provides direction, supervision, support of educational opportunities, employee development and mentoring, and counseling and guidance for staff.

 

 Develops and oversees department training sessions and professional development opportunities.

 

Complies with UW Health policy regarding new employee orientation and documents accordingly.

 

 Responsible for the annual completion and documentation of performance evaluations.

 

 Ensures that all aspects of hiring, evaluation, discipline and termination of employees are completed in compliance with policy and procedures.

 

 Responsible for the annual review and update of employees’ position descriptions.

 

 All objectives and assignments given to supervisors are completed on time and conform to applicable standards, rules and regulations. Routinely evaluates personnel requirements based on productivity standards and patient care/service needs.

 

 Collaborates with community partners for support and involvement in child life and programs

 

 Research and develop opportunities for program growth in response UW Health Strategic Initiatives.

 

 Collaborates with philanthropy regularly to evaluate resources related to service line support within UW Health.
