JOB SUMMARY

Supports the surgical team with achieving efficient and quality patient care.  Assist the surgical teams with on time starts and turn over time.  Collaborates with surgeons and anesthesia providers to facilitate patient flow.  Coordinates staff assignments and care of surgical patients.  Participants in quality improvement activities in support of departmental and divisional nursing philosophy and objective as well as health system initiatives.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES


In collaboration with Operational Supervisor and Nurse Manager, assesses the clinical needs of OR staff for the defined patient population within the Shared Governance model.

 

Rotates between charge nurse role and assisting in the pods. Follows standard work for day shift charge nurse. Works with team to ensure first start and turn over times are monitored and met by working in assigned pod to help get cases started and assist with needs of the rooms (positioning, prep and moving help and room turn-over).

 

Attends and participates in daily SSA huddle and OR report and huddles.

 

Works closely with surgeon, ensure surgeon’s case requests are fulfilled, run interference and report any identified issues to Operational Supervisor and/or Manager.

 

Works with SSA to get additional requested equipment/supplies.

 

Utilizes the nursing process to provide direct and indirect care for patients in assigned area and their family members, maintaining confidentiality of position acquired information. Communicates select patient’s progress to physician and other members of the multidisciplinary team. Performs all aspects of care in an environment that optimizes patient and environmental safety and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and compliance efforts.

 

Provides input on staff assignments as needed. Provide input on 90 day, mid-year and annual evaluations.

 

Assists employees with problem solving regarding patient care to ensure quality patient care. Serves as a role model for all staff. Supports staff.

 

Participates in various health system committees and programs as needed.

 

Collaborates with perioperative leadership to develop departmental policy and procedures. Reviews current literature and incorporates information which is relevant to the department. Assists with development of patient care policies and procedures in accordance with current literature, and established JCAHO, AORN, and AAMI standards.

 

Supports unit team philosophy and management decisions. Consistently communicates department needs, issues and concerns with perioperative leadership. Consistently uses good communication skills.

 

Provides patient care as needed.
