JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Surgical Services Manager receives, decontaminates, processes, assembles and maintains surgical instrumentation for the health System.  After consulting OR schedule and requisitions, assembles case set-ups for the Operating Room. Schedules surgical procedures with physicians, physician's offices and other hospital staff utilizing hospital computer scheduling system.  Maintains databases and assists, supervises and educates other users on scheduling system.  Ensures all necessary equipment is available for surgical cases.  Orders and restocks supplies for all perioperative areas.  Performa a variety of support activities for the surgical team promoting an efficient team schedule.  Transports patients to and from Surgery Department.  Participates in continuous quality improvement activities and educational experiences in support of departmental philosophy and objectives, as well as Health System initiatives.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES


Assembles surgical cases and dresses carts with linen packs, sterile supplies, instrumentation, solutions and other required supplies and sends completed carts to surgery according to established procedures. Monitors surgical schedule and communicate daily instrumentation issues to appropriate staff.

 

Restocks special trays following established procedures and sends completed carts or trays to surgery or other areas maintaining specialty resources in a neat, clean and organized manner and communicates and/or documents any set changes or new instrumentation.

 

Receives clean case set ups in supply area, empties and puts away returned sterile supplies and equipment appropriately.

 

Receives dirty case set ups in decontamination room. Washes and disinfects instrumentation, patient equipment and case carts according to hospital policy and procedures.

 

Differentiates between various packaging materials and containers, selecting and assembling system appropriate items to be sterilized. Assembles instrument sets and special trays, identifying specialty or department and priorities according to established criteria.

 

Assists with orientation of new staff and provides input into staff performance by completing peer evaluations maintaining confidentiality of position acquired information.

 

Restocks and performs selected reports and transactions for all OR Omnicells.

 

Transports patients to and from the operating room suite utilizing proper body mechanics and Assists with Positioning.

 

Cleans and maintains the operating suite including transporting case equipment and supplies and dispatching them to the decontamination area.

 

Changes sharps containers per established guidelines.

 

Performs all aspects of care in an environment that optimizes patient and environmental safety and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and compliance efforts.

 

Takes reservations for all surgeries utilizing necessary equipment and systems in accordance with hospital policy and procedures and scheduling guidelines.

 

Arranges daily surgery schedule, accommodating physician’s time needs and ensuring a smooth and efficient flow and progression of scheduled cases. Continually audits schedule for workability and correct time calculations Maintains clock allocations and scheduling of open times.

 

Maintains knowledge of frequently utilized equipment to ensure that equipment is not double scheduled and doctor’s preferences are considered. Conflict checks all resource requirements.

 

Efficiently coordinates scheduling of procedures with other ancillary departments.

 

Notifies Surgical Services Manager when special or out of stock equipment or supplies are requested by surgeon.

 

Generates computer copy of tentative schedules daily for the next seven days along with pre-surgical comments. On a weekly basis, generates report of an additional ten to fourteen day schedules.

 

Maintains appropriate system backups per established procedures and department policy.
