Working under the direction of a physician, the RNFA may provide direct care to patients using the nursing process preoperatively, intraoperatively and postoperatively. Other nursing duties as assigned. Participates in continuous quality improvement activities and educational experiences in support of departmental and divisional nursing philosophy and objectives, as well as, Health System initiatives. Works with other healthcare team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Complies with regulatory agency guidelines. | | | | | | | | |
• | Collaborates with other health team members to develop, coordinate and implement a preoperative plan of care unique to individual patient needs. Maintains dignity of the patient while assuming the responsibility of patient advocate. Skillfully applies principles of asepsis and infection control. | • | Has excellent knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative technique to work in collaboration with the surgeon. Preparation and administration of medications perioperatively, as directed by the surgeon and anesthesiologist. | • | Provides exposure and tissue dissection through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques. Handles and dissects tissues in collaboration with the surgeon. | • | Clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels and other procedures in collaboration with the surgeon to achieve haemostasias. Sutures muscle, fascia, subcutaneous and skin tissue in collaboration with the surgeon | • | Places Drains as surgically indicated. Assists with cannulation and decannulation procedures. Evaluates outcomes of nursing care and ensures continuity of care by communicating pertinent patient information to the healthcare team. | • | Recognizes safety hazards and initiates appropriate preventative and/or corrective actions to ensure a safe environment for the patient and surgical team throughout the perioperative experience. Facilitates surgical flow, recognize and remove obstacles to timely case performance.
