JOB SUMMARY

The Radiology Nursing Supervisor is a registered nurse who demonstrates a high degree of professionalism and has responsibility for management of patient care, nursing personnel, and unit operations. The Radiology Nursing Supervisor works in a collaborative manner with the Nurse Manager to facilitate efficient clinical operations, professional development of staff, accountability and effective management of resources. 

 

The Radiology Nursing Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily nursing operations at varied locations, including University Hospital (UH) and designated ambulatory settings.  Responsibilities include managing resources, monitoring patient throughput and creating an environment of staff accountability in order to deliver high quality patient and family centered care.  This coordination involves direct communication with, but not limited to, senior nursing leadership, nursing staff, medical staff, ancillary personnel, case management, social work and other departments to appropriately plan, direct, and evaluates care for patients and their families.  This position requires expertise in problem solving, decision making and communication skills when interacting with these various disciplines.

 

The Radiology Nursing Supervisor is responsible for a safe and therapeutic unit environment and for efficient use of radiology resources in order to support the Radiology operating budget.  The Radiology Nursing Supervisor serves as a role model, demonstrating competent patient care, leadership and professional behavior which promote quality improvement programs.

 

The Radiology Nursing Supervisor, under the direction of and in collaboration with the Radiology Nurse Manager, is responsible for supervisory duties related to nursing personnel.  These duties include hiring, conducting performance evaluations, counseling, facilitating investigatory meetings which may result in the need to pursue progressive discipline including termination, professional and clinical development, orientation plans, scheduling, daily assignments, education, and assisting nurse manager in planning staff meetings. The Radiology Nurse Supervisor position will include a certain percent of assigned direct reports (up to 50% of the Radiology Nursing staff).

 

The Radiology Nursing Supervisor has educational responsibilities within the disciplines of nursing and the hospital.  The Radiology Nursing Supervisor utilizes an understanding of the forces of Magnet to support the Nurse Manager in ensuring standards of excellence are fostered and met. The Radiology Nursing Supervisor may also act as a resource to the institution and community in areas of expertise. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES


Integrates the principles and philosophy of the professional nursing care delivery system into practice.

 

Plans for and provides a staffing pattern which meets patient care needs and supports primary nursing.

 

Provides for a performance evaluation process that includes appropriate counseling in relation to performance, progressive discipline and termination.

 

Participates in the recruitment process, including interviewing and selection of staff.

 

Informs, teaches and enforces adherence to new or revised hospital or departmental policies and procedures.

 

Assists with the coordination of staff meetings on a regular basis.

 

Effectively communicates department/leadership decisions and policies to staff. Facilitates the flow of information from medical staff to the nursing staff regarding patient care procedures and new equipment.

 

Supports the orientation of all new staff and promotes ongoing continuing education.

 

Promotes open and objective communication within the nursing unit, as well as with health care personnel, patients and families.

 

Develops and utilizes a process for effective fiscal management, including utilization of materials and supplies.

 

Directs the care team leader (CTL) in making adjustments to the radiology nursing staffing pattern to reflect changes in care requirements, patient census and staffing resources.

 

Participates in the preparation of the budget in collaboration with the Nurse Manager.

 

Monitors fiscal reports in collaboration with the Nurse Manager

 

Uses formal and informal organizational structures of the institution as part of the problem-solving process.

 

Provides a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, students and unit staff.

 

Promotes cost-effective behavior in staff through observation and education.

 

Participates in the development of annual Radiology Nursing goals and objectives. Identifies and resolves complex or recurring operational problems and consults with the Nurse Manager when necessary.

 

Serves as a role model, demonstrating effective patient care, leadership, and professional behavior.

 

Acts as a consultant and clinical resource to staff through provision of patient care and coordination of patient and family centered care.

 

Assures that patient/family nursing care is provided within UW Health Nursing Department's and the Radiology Department’s established standards of care.

 

Monitors staff schedule to ensure appropriate staffing levels and skill mix.

 

Coordinates medical and nursing management of patient care.

 

Supports patient advocacy and the patient's Bill of Rights.

 

Monitors all nursing activities related to patient care.

 

Participates in formulating patient care policies and procedures.

 

Promotes a quality improvement program that incorporates patient care standards and meets Joint Commission guidelines.

 

Develops, maintains, and evaluates unit based documentation tools to promote continuity on all patient care activities.

 

Creates an environment in which intellectual curiosity is stimulated and continued learning is supported.

 

Reviews policies and procedures to maintain a current level of practice.

 

Participates in family, patient and staff teaching in the Department of Radiology and throughout the hospital.

 

Identifies professional strengths and areas for growth and demonstrates professional development through formal and informal learning experiences.

 

Participates in professional organizations in area of specialization and interest.

 

Serves as a role model for professional effectiveness through efficient time management, organization of work, and prioritization.

 

Participates on radiology and hospital committees.

 

Supports and/or participates in research programs approved by the Department of Nursing.

 

Supports UW Health outreach mission through consultation and/or participation in health promotion, health education, community outreach and specialty requests from community agencies.

 

Assures patient care, comfort and confidentiality
