Working independently under the general supervision of the Radiology Manager and/or Supervisor, the incumbent reviews MRI orders for clinical appropriateness, assigns MRI protocols, conducts comprehensive MRI safety screenings, and collaborates with radiologists, providers, schedulers, and MRI staff to support safe, efficient, and standardized imaging practices across the enterprise. This position is 100% remote. The position functions within a centralized MRI command center model and may perform remote MRI scanning activities in accordance with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and established clinical workflows. - Evaluates clinical indications and independently assigns appropriate MRI protocols based on patient history, clinical questions, radiologist preferences, and departmental standards.
- Collaborates with radiologists to resolve complex protocoling questions and determine appropriate imaging strategies.
- Communicates protocol recommendations and clarifications to ordering providers, schedulers, MRI technologists, and radiologists.
- Assists in protocol optimization initiatives to improve image quality, operational efficiency, and patient outcomes.
- Supports scheduling teams by ensuring exams are appropriately protocolled prior to patient appointments.
- Supports remote MRI scanning workflows through the enterprise command center by providing timely protocoling, MRI safety review, clinical consultation, and escalation support to on-site MRI technologists.
- Uses approved communication, imaging, and workflow technologies to coordinate command center activities and promote consistent, safe, and efficient MRI operations across locations.
- Performs remote MRI scanning activities utilizing approved remote scanning technology and workflows, collaborating with on-site MRI personnel to ensure safe, high-quality imaging and compliance with regulatory and operational requirements.
- Performs comprehensive MRI safety screenings through review of medical records, patient questionnaires, and coordination with patients and clinical teams as needed.
- Evaluates patients for MRI contraindications, including implanted devices, foreign bodies, prior surgeries, metallic implants, and other safety concerns.
- Researches implantable devices and verifies MRI compatibility using approved resources, manufacturer documentation, and established MRI safety guidelines.
- Identifies patients requiring additional review, medical clearance, or alternative imaging recommendations.
- Collaborates with radiologists, providers, and MRI departments to resolve safety concerns prior to imaging.
- Documents screening findings, recommendations, and required follow-up within designated electronic systems (EPIC).
- Ensures compliance with organizational MRI safety policies, American College of Radiology (ACR) MRI Safety Guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
- Serves as an enterprise resource regarding MRI safety questions, protocoling guidance, and best practices.
- Participates in interdisciplinary meetings, educational activities, and process improvement initiatives.
- Supports enterprise-wide consistency in MRI protocoling and patient safety practices.
- Adheres to established departmental policies, quality assurance standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives related to MRI protocol accuracy, patient safety outcomes, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
- Monitors protocoling and screening processes to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Assists with development and maintenance of MRI safety and protocoling resources.
- Maintains expertise in MRI technology, safety standards, and clinical applications through ongoing education and professional development.
- Participates in training and mentoring of staff related to MRI protocoling and safety screening practices.
