JOB SUMMARY

The Casting Technician-Senior possesses the highest level of skill in the application and removal of casts, orthopedic splints and devices, and the set up and maintenance of traction.  All of the duties of the Casting Technician are fulfilled. After fabrication, this position is further involved by fitting and finishing castings, involving extensive patient contact. The Casting Technician-Senior requires less supervision than the staff level to perform duties as determined by the medical team.  The primary focus of this position is patient care (inpatient and outpatient) but it also includes significant efforts with education, research and outreach.  The Casting Technician-Senior possesses the primary responsibility for the orientation, training and mentoring other Casting Technicians.  The Casting Technician-Senior will assume additional responsibilities, as delegated by the Manager.  He or she functions with a high degree of autonomy under the supervision of the Manager.  An essential component of the Casting Technician-Senior is to demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills while working with various disciplines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Casts: The Casting Technician-Senior collaborates with all medical staff to determine the most appropriate cast or brace for a patient with particular diagnosis and treatment(s).

The Casting Technician-Senior applies casts and splints. She/he possesses superior knowledge of types of casts and splints and demonstrates the proper procedure in applying them. In addition, she/he possesses the highest level of skill in their application.

The Casting Technician-Senior individualizes splints/casts to reflect the entire range of physician orders and patient needs.

•

The Casting Technician-Senior utilizes the appropriate padding, wrapping and molding techniques to ensure proper fit and placement of a cast or splint.

•

The Casting Technician-Senior possesses advanced skill and knowledge for selecting the proper procedure for the removal of a cast or splint. When using a cast saw, scissor, or other device, she/he must maintain proper alignment of the fracture in each and every phase of treatment: application, adjustment, and removal.

•

It is essential for the Casting Technician to document patient care according to UW Hospital policies and procedures both inpatient and outpatient. (Refer to policies 6.22, 13.14). The Casting Technician-Senior is to be fluent in documentation standards and understands and follows policies to be able to assist the Objective and Associate level in proper care and documentation.

Specific casts and splints should be applied only by an Casting Technician—Senior after completing physician based training, signing off competency to perform independently and demonstrated necessary assessment and documentation requirements along with the knowledge of the pathophysiology of what they are assessing, implications of removal or application on the body system are:

•

Hip Spica, casts with brace drop lock, BKA, diabetic patients, spastic children and adults, serial casting.

•

Removal of external fixator, removal of wound drains upon demonstrated competency.

•

Custom bracing of the knee and elbow.

•

The Casting Technician-Senior also assists the physician in the Operating Room, Emergency Room, outpatient procedure settings and clinics. She/he possesses advanced knowledge and proven competency in positioning patients, sterile preparation, and surgical instruments.

The Casting Technician-Senior fits orthopedic device/brace per physician orders. These devices/braces include, but are not limited to:

Boots Humerus braces

•

Cervical collars Knee braces

•

Darco shoes Lumbar braces

•

Diabetic shoes/boots Night splints

•

Hand splints Post-op shoes

•

Hip braces

•

The Casting Technician-Senior possesses superior knowledge regarding custom braces. This knowledge includes proper fitting and measuring techniques to ensure optimal patient comfort and care.

•

The Casting Technician-Senior must comply with the documentation guidelines set forth by UW Hospital and Clinics and be able to teach other technicians on the appropriate information to document.

•

The Casting Technician-Senior instructs and documents patient education relating to the proper use of crutches, canes, walkers and wheelchairs, proper care of casts, splints, or other orthopedic devices.

•

The Casting Technician-Senior assists with the education of physicians, physician assistants, medical students, RN’s, NP’s, MA’s and Casting Technician-Associate and Objective.

•

The Casting Technician-Senior attends advanced level lectures and seminars to further the education of him or her and others.

•

The Casting Technician-Senior participates in on-going education through professional journals, continuing education programs, and other offerings available.

•

Maintains proper equipment, tools, and supplies for the cast room.

•

Identifies cast room problems and inefficiencies and brings these to the attention of the clinic manager. Together, the Orthopedic Technician-Senior and the clinic manager will develop a plan to resolve the issues.

•

Ability to assist with development and follow policies and procedures relating to cast room staff duties.

•

Assist in the development of cast room related competencies and training programs for staff.

•

Provides and assists with compliance to standards and regulations such as Joint Committee on Hospital Accreditation, Health Information Privacy and Portability Act and other hospital or governmental regulations as they become known to the staff.

•

The Casting Technician-Senior will also receive training and competency in obtaining vital signs on all patient populations as deemed appropriate.

•

Assists with incoming patient problem calls and outside physician or health care staff questions.

•

Consults with the Triage RN in determining the appropriate level of care for cast related questions and scheduling appointments.

•

Responsible for ensuring adequate clinic coverage in the event of unexpected absences.

As needed, additional responsibilities reasonably within the scope of duties and physical requirements may be assigned.  ALL DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS MUST BE PERFORMED CONSISTENT WITH THE UW HEALTH PERFORMANCE STANDARDS AND RESPECT FOR PEOPLE COMMITTMENTS.
